On Thursday it's...

World Book Day
a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and is marked in over 100 countries around the globe. The origins of the day we now celebrate in the UK and Ireland come from Catalonia, where roses and books were given as gifts to loved ones on St. George’s Day – a tradition started over 80 years ago.

and I'm going to find my nearest Eason's bookshop and spend a grand total of £10 on a book. That's using up a book token I received at Christmas. I intend to take the book home and instead of putting in a bookcase 'to read later' start reading it right away.Any suggestions of books to look out for? I've already read most of the Bible and glanced at the Koran as a child.

I've just picked up Notes From an Exhibition by Patrick Gale. Haven't read any of his stuff before but this has had excellent reviews so thought I'd give it a try. Particularly as it's about mental disturbance and the creative process both of which fascinate me.

And check through some of the books on John Self's blog http://theasylum.wordpress.com/

Thanks Nick! At a creative writing class I went to there was a guy who I discovered suffered from (if that's the correct term)schizophrenia. His writing was amazing and I was fascinated how his condition/illness affected his writing. So I'll definitely be on the look out for that book.
